Ford successfully weathered the economic downturn better than its Detroit rivals. However, the Lincoln brand hasn’t been performing quite as well following the economic crisis. GM’s Cadillac brand has slowly, but steadily been rejuvenating its products and its image, but Lincoln still has a ways to go before it will be able to go toe-to-toe with the very best products the luxury segment has to offer.
According to reports, Ford is preparing to give Lincoln everything it needs, including an investment of $1 billion into Lincoln over the coming years.
“We’re fully committed to making Lincoln a world-class luxury brand with compelling vehicles and an exceptional consumer experience to match,” Lincoln spokesman Timothy Elliott said Monday.
There are many rumors about what we can expect from Lincoln over the next few years. IHS Automotive predicts Lincoln will next year add a compact sedan — a premium cousin to the Ford Focus — and a compact crossover in 2013 as a 2014 model. Lincoln will also prepare successors for the MKS full-size sedan, MKZ midsize sedan, and MKX utility vehicle.
Although platform sharing with Ford vehicles is expected to continue, Ford promises that Lincoln will be distinguished by their unique look, more technology and standard features, and powertrains that give them greater performance.
