Lincoln MKT, Hyundai Sonata Earn Safety Recognition

by Lincoln in the News on March 5, 2010

Two of this year’s most-talked-about vehicles—the 2010 Lincoln MKT and the 2011 Hyundai Sonata—have been recognized for achieving high marks in two separate measures of industry safety.

The all-new MKT earned five-star crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in both front- and side-impact crash testing. It’s another impressive achievement for the big crossover, which has started to gain traction in the marketplace for its combination of high luxury and high-tech features. Notably, these include an impressive suite of safety features, such as a blind-spot warning system, adaptive cruise control, and a collision warning system that also automatically enhances the braking functionality of the vehicle in case of a potential impact.

Late last year, following the Lincoln’s introduction, the MKT also was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This recognition is given to vehicles that do well in the institute’s own crash testing—which includes an analysis of each vehicle’s seat and head restraints—and also offer electronic stability control.

And this year, the same recognition was given to the all-new Sonata. The Hyundai offers excellent fuel efficiency, expressive styling and and, like the Lincoln, plenty of safety features. Among them: An advanced anti-lock braking system, six airbags (including front and rear side-curtain airbags and active front-seat head restraints.)

The ’11 Sonata was already expected to be a best seller in the highly competitive midsize sedan segment—despite the fact it was already recalled for a problem with its front door latches—and the IIHS ratings help make a good value even better.
